He's probably the top recruit to go to Maryland in 30 years. Maybe more.

If Trimble and Layman stay the Terps could likely be ranked top 5 pre-season with national championship talk.

Not that that guarantees anything. I just hope Duke has to.come to College Park in the ACC/B1G challenge.

The Wash Post says this AM......

that Melo will check out to see if he's a lottery pick. If so, he'll go, but he'll stay if not.

I think it's pretty safe he'll be returning for another season.

Yeah. And if he is a sure fire lottery pick he should go but I don't think he is yet. I think people are still higher on Layman than Trimble right now because of his size and skill combo. But now that Stone is coming in, their stock should go up.

They should have a lot of national exposure and a legit front court so Melo can dish and Layman can play the 3. Layman played a lot of stretch 4 and was the Terps' leading rebounder (followed by Wells and Trimble). He can do that but I think he'll flourish more on the wing.

I'm being facetious but wasn't Joe Smith a huge land?

In hindsight he absolutely was, but I don't think he was a highly sought after recruit. UNC and Duke didn't recruit him and articles I've seen said that Gary/Maryland found him kind of accidentally recruiting other players.

So in terms of recruiting rankings and hype, Diamond Stone is probably the biggest get for Maryland since the Lefty years.

Being a member of the 12 tribes, I dearly wanted him to be something special.

Haha. I had to look him up. I wasn't following recruiting that closely when I was in school and he declined coming to UMD anyway. I just cared about going to the games back then. The Smith stuff I had to look up too because my friends and I were discussing it yesterday.

It still looks like Stone is rated higher.

Regardless, without trying to objectively figure out who was the best recruit, it's a huge commitment for Maryland. At the very least, next year's team will likely be the highest regarded since 2001-2002.
