  • The Wire vs. The Sopranos

    Who u got and why?

I'm going with the Wire. I like the concept of every character going full circle.

The Soprano's was great, but there were better side characters in the Wire. Tony's wife and sister made me fast forward alot watching the Sopranos.
500 internet fights, that's the number I figured when I first joined igglephans. 500 internet fights and you could consider yourself a legitimate internet-tough guy. You need them for experience, to develop leather skin. So I got started. Of course along the way you stop thinking about being tough and all that. It stops being the point. You get past the silliness of it all. But then...after...you realize that's what you are.

    Apples/Oranges.

Both were great shows. I bought the first two seasons of The Wire a couple of years ago to watch again. They were first broadcast in 2002. Watched some episodes a few months ago. They surprisingly (for me) didn't really age well. The series was based on technology, and technology has changed so profoundly in ten years that it seemed quaint.

Pre smart phone, pre Wi-Fi, pre a lot of shit. The characters are still great but the shows seem old.

Sopranos on the other hand, did age well and is still good for the few people who never saw it.

Though even before Gandolfini's death I'd been thinking it might be fun to watch Sopranos again.

The Wire is a better show, but I don't think any HBO show has a performance as great as Gandolfini delivered. Amazing character he helped bring to life.

The Wire is the best show i've ever seen, followed very closely by Breaking Bad, then the sopranos.

            Did you see Cranston's tweet?

I'm saddened by James Gandolfini's passing. He was a great talent & I owe him. Quite simply, without Tony Soprano there is no Walter White.

I don't see how that factors on how good a series is. Its 2013 and I watch movies made in the 80s and enjoy them.

The Wire, but best character goes to Gandolfini.

This. The later years of the Sorpanos had some plot holes, and didn't wrap up as well as the Wire. But Tony Soprano was the greatest TV character ever.

These are my top 3 too, but I have the Sopranos above BB after last year (season 5 I think?). I just hope the last 8 episodes are better than that.

The Wire wouldn't exist without the Sopranos. Sopranos changed what a show could be.

So do I, but some classic movies really don't age well. Easy Rider is a prime example. I like the characters in The Wire, but it's still at its core, a procedural cop show. I liked The Shield, too, which spawned a lot of writing talent in town.

I disagree. I think Oz was the first HBO show that set the standard on what you can do.

Now's not the time to profit from a tragedy and turn it into a debate. We need for the emotions to settle before we can have this discussion.
