  • Need a restaurant recommendation guys

    All,

Sorry to intrude on your playoff revelry. My father is heading up to Philly in a week and a half to have spinal surgery, and I'd like him to have a good meal the night before he has to go under the knife. I don't know much about Philly, haven't been there in eight years, but he said his surgery is at Thomas Jefferson hospital, which he said was near Chinatown. They'll be getting a hotel room as close to there as possible, so restaurants in that general vicinity would be preferred.

My father likes all types of food, but doesn't drink coffee, so no recommendations based on the quality of someone's cappuccino or anything like that. My stepmother is a wonderful woman, but also kind of picky and gluten intolerant. I'm not too worried about her, she may not eat much, but if there was at least an option for her on the menu, that would be nice.

Cost isn't really an object, but they aren't dressy people. They have an "Our money is as green as anyone's" type of attitude and might try to show up to some five star place in sweatpants and flannel. I like that stubbornness in them, but it probably won't get them in the door at some places.

Basically, just want to tell them where to go to get a quality meal the night before his surgery, one of those family owned, non-chain, food made with love kind of places, in that general area.

    Thanks in advance.

Mark Verti's places are a good place to start. 2 of his places (Vetri and Amis) are within blocks of the hospital. Vetri is only chef tasting menu and last i looked i think it's somewhere around $125/head...but worth the price if you can get in. Amis is more ala cart and more of a pasta place. I've been to both twice and i'd recommend them to anyone.

Butcher and Singer is another place that i suggest a lot is right around the corner too. Steak joint that's unique in atmosphere, but people seem to overdress there. I don't know that they would turn you away because of dress, but it's definitely something i took notice to when i was there.

Move the dinner up a day. He'll need to fasting the night before surgery. Good luck, I wish your dad all the best.

Del Frisco's 1426 Chestnut St. It was in the movie "Law Abiding Citizen"

Even though that's not close to Chinatown, it might be worth a quick taxi.

Thanks for all the recommendations so far guys (mostly), I'm looking at each of them.

As for the type, not sure. I know he has spinal stenosis and some disk compression issues. Basically, if he lets his condition deteriorate, he'll wind up in a wheelchair or a quadriplegic eventually, and it was getting to a point where he needed to make a decision, so he decided to get it taken care of.

It's a major surgery, but it's not supposed to be the sort of thing where many complications should arise, and it should relieve his issues. Regardless, all good thoughts are appreciated.

Take him for an old fashioned at an Oriental "spa", and then to Wendy's afterwards. You know its what he really wants....

I second the advice to check that he can eat that soon before his scheduled surgery, just to be safe.

Talula's Garden is really fantastic. The hospital is also close to Garces Trading Company, which is very good.

I like Caribou Cafe. Not cutting edge, but good food and a relaxed atmosphere. Think it's on Walnut around 10th
