It was a muffed punt with no clear recovery. When there's no clear recovery the ball goes back to the offense. Because it went out of the end zone it's a touch back. If he'd have had possession of the ball and fumbled it and the same thing happened, it would have been a safety.

Tha's my understanding. It was the difference between a muff and a fumble. But he never had possession. Though yet it does seem odd that his f up ended up gaining him like 15 yards.
