I really don't understand the new distinction between UDFA signings and Rookie Tryout signings but apparently there is one.

The interesting name on the Eagles Rookie Tryout list is Weston Steelhammer from the Air Force Academy. He was featured during the draft but the Air Force won't let him of his post-graduation service commitment. Apparently, he will be at Eagles Rookie Minicamp.

I sort of see it as the college walk on versus the preferred walk on.

Nine out of the 10 staffs we spoke with use the “preferred concept” and to those nine, the clear difference between a preferred walk-on versus someone who simply walks-on is that the preferred means he is guaranteed a spot on the 105 man roster day one of camp, while other walk-ons will have to go through tryouts to see if they can earn a spot on the roster.


For NFL teams, in the cases of undrafted free agent signing versus a rookie tryout, the undrafted free agent signing would get a bit of guaranteed money, aka signing bonus, versus the rookie tryout that doesn't get squat other than the chance to try out for the team.
