Looks like they will pick up the 20 mil...

  • #2
From a strategic perspective, it makes sense, right? They can cut him before the 20 mil is paid w/o issue or he can buy out (they just cut him a check for 1 mil plus he earned some other bonuses).

Franchising him in the difficult move. Also, who reported they'd let him walk?

Not sure, but I feel like it was just a few days ago.

I wonder if they already have something in the works with another team ?

They are either trying to recoup 2mil or they have a trade in place. Foles can pay back 2 mil and opt out. Once the fifth day of the new league year happens, his contract is guaranteed. Edited to add the league year starts March 13.

The risk is that teams will wait it out knowing that his salary becomes fully guaranteed on March 18th.

I like this news. Everything until now said they were expected to just let him walk. Maybe there are enough possible suitors (Jags, Broncos, Dolphins, Giants...) that someone will have to give up a pick to make sure they don't lose out on Foles.

So, this just means the Eagles think they can trade Nick for better than a 3rd round comp pick.

            Oakland?

I'm thinking they would want to trade him to a AFC team...would there be an offer from the Giants that they would consider? Jags is a likely spot now that Flip is there right?

That’s impossible. A few gm’s on here said a few weeks ago his option would never be picked up as Eagles have no leverage & are way over the cap.

No way you send him to the Giants unless they offer something like a 1st rounder. And that's not gonna happen.

Some radio guy in Denver said they'd let him walk. No idea where that came from, or why his report was given any credence.

If there's a deal in place, we'll know it if/when Nick accepts the option. It could happen pretty quickly (remember the Alex Smith deal happened during Super Bowl week last year).

Otherwise, Schefter is reporting they intend to franchise tag him.

No idea if it'll actually come to that, or if the Eagles are just letting it be known that Foles is never going to make it to the free agent market.

“Rumor” that I’m not even sure is really a rumor...

Gruden is a moron, regardless. I hope it’s true.

It would seem that's what they are hoping .. They would still need foles and Oakland or whoever to play ball. My guess is foles just buys his way into fa and chooses his own fate while the eagles get a 3rd round comp pick on 20.

Would this create 2 mil in cap space...or is that completely unrelated?

                              Yes, that's what's being said.

The option alone is understandable from that standpoint. It's the report about the franchise tag that tells me Howie has other plans. The Eagles know this is a very weak off-season for quarterbacks (unlike last year, where there were three $20M free agent QBs and five 1st round QBs), and at least six teams have a genuine need at the position. They're betting there's at least one team willing to part with at least a natural 3rd round pick to not have to compete on the open market with as many as five other teams for Foles. Howie might even have an offer already.

I think a trade is more likely than not here.
