Why would the Eagles have not accepted a third?

I'd hope that with Jacksonville as the only suitor, Foles could just come back for great backup money. Not gonna happen though.

The complexity with player contract maneuvering and PR optics may have been unattractive enough for the Eagles to not accept a 3rd round. A comp would garner a 3rd.

If they are the only suitors, Foles will go there.

My guess was Cincinnati. Without going full geigh back I think I remember saying something along the lines of "I think you are overvaluing the Eagles qbs" or something like it. Let me preface this by saying I respect and appreciate everything Nick has done. Our (OUR) landscape has forever changed because of him. I don't think the league ever viewed or valued foles the way some of us have. He played out of his mind in the nfccg and sb. This year, he played ok but he had bad ints in almost every single game. I bet he ends up signing for something similar to what keenum signed for.

If the eagles could get a 3rd for him they would have. A 3rd rounder this year is more valuable than a 3rd comp next year.

Also Jacksonville's 3rd rounder could easily be between 65th and 70th overall, whereas comp picks begin at 97th overall.

edit: We're just kind of unlucky that pretty much every team either has an established QB or a 1st rounder that they hope will be their guy. Not very long ago, Foles's SB run would have enticed a team to trade a 1st for him.

Apparently I’m not the only one overvaluing Foles. No market as a FA other than Jax? Who thought that? I don’t remember anyone thinking that.

We don’t know what the Eagles asking price was for Foles. Several talking heads commented that the Eagles had an inflated sense of Foles worth after the Bradford trade. Several also believed the Eagles intended to franchise tag and trade Foles.

Regarding Sudfeld, I said the Eagles would need to place a 1st on him to all but ensure he stays. I still believe that a team could get a “wild hair” and grab him with a second tender. A “wild hair” suggests that it’s not likely though.

Based on the Eagles latest comments, the Eagles are better served to trade him now than to utilize him as a back up for one year.

A lot of talking heads think the eagles are going to draft a cb in the first round, so what? I didn't think foles would have a huge market and certainly didn't see him getting tagged and traded. It made no sense to someone keeping "the simplest solution" in mind. The eagles never had leverage. If everyone knows the cards you're holding then you can't bluff (place a tag). You estimated that teams would be fighting for foles to the point that they'd give up draft picks for the eagles to swap his rights instead of having to bid against all the other teams trying to sign him. LOL. No one is giving a 2nd for Sudfeld wild hair or not. Sudfeld has more value as a competent backup than the shitty draft compensation the eagles would struggle to get. I'd probably draft a sudfeld in the 6th round (like Washington did) before I gave anything up for him.

Do you think Flacco is worth giving up a 4th round pick plus his $17.5m contract as opposed to competing for Foles without giving up compensation? Foles is the cheaper option here.

If you saw how this was going to unfold, then surely Denver had some idea as well. Flacco that much better?

Flacco might actually have a better rep around the league. He's been consistently mediocre and that might be more appealing than Foles. I read somewhere that Denver preferred Flacco because he is more experienced at taking snaps under center? This team also signed Case Keenum... Also I believe flacco has no guaranteed money left so they can cut him with no penalty other than the 4th they gave up. If I were building a team I wouldn't look at Foles as a qb other than a year or two bridge to my franchise guy. I'm not sold on him as a starter in this league.

I also read somewhere that Denver preferred Flacco as opposed to Foles because he had more experience under center. Flacco played under center 34% of the time in 2018. I can’t imagine Flacco and Foles’ careers being significantly different under center.

Bruce Allen recently stated that the Foreskins were not in the market for Flacco. They had no contact with Baltimore regarding Flacco according Allen.

It seems to me like Denver is spinning this.

The Eagles held out hope that they'd get at least a third for Foles. When that didn't look likely, they decided not to incur the $25 million risk of tagging him. It's not that they had an inflated sense of his value, it's that they had no leverage in a trade situation. Last year they didn't need to trade Foles and they could afford his salary, so Cleveland allegedly offered a 2nd. This year, the Eagles could not afford Foles. Money demands and system (and the fact that Baltimore ate a bunch of dead money) made Flacco a more attractive option for Denver. The Giants are keeping Manning. Washington allegedly likes McCoy. That leaves only Miami and Jacksonville as options for Foles.

If the Eagles get a 2nd for Sudfeld, you get to pick my avatar and signature forever. There is no way on earth that they get a 2nd for Sudfeld when they couldn't get a 3rd for Foles.

Foles play for Jacksonville this year.

We’ll have a chance to revisit his performance and compare it to Flacco. We’ll also have a chance to compare Foles’ performance to the QB’s in Cinn., Tampa, Miami, Wash., NY and Oakland.

That’s when we’ll know if Foles was worth a 3rd.

We may have to wait a little longer before we revisit Sudfeld and evaluate his worth.
