  • Can someone explain

why coaches on the sideline cover their mouths with their Denny's menus while calling the play into the QB's helmet radio ... but the QB then yells out the play in a huddle that is clearly within earshot of the defense?

    “It’s complicated”
500 internet fights, that's the number I figured when I first joined igglephans. 500 internet fights and you could consider yourself a legitimate internet-tough guy. You need them for experience, to develop leather skin. So I got started. Of course along the way you stop thinking about being tough and all that. It stops being the point. You get past the silliness of it all. But then...after...you realize that's what you are.

        Huh?

The issue at hand is why lip reading is better than hearing when stealing play calls.

My thought is it is easier to cheat when a guy dedicated to cheating is doing it from the booth or the sideline. The players have a lot of other sh*t going on.

I didn’t say it made sense, I am saying it is reactionary.

Ok ... but then he has to read lips ... and then relay that to the defense ... why not just designate a "listener" and have him yell it out?

Common sense says there has to be a reason why they do it... unless it's just for drama purposes, which I guess is imaginable.

This brings up an interesting question for me.

How noisy is it on the field? We know what it is like from our seats, but how noisy is it in the middle of things?

FF used to say that it wasn’t to hide what he was saying. It was to help the QB hear what he was saying over the ambient noise.

Or, is it irrelevant if they hear the play call because they don't know the terminology other teams use?
