  • OT: An electrical guys out there? Light socket question

Was attempting to replace a light-bulb that went out, or so I thought, but turns out, the fixture is not working. The electrical tape that was holding the wires together was brittle/crumbly and looked kinda burnt but didn't really smell burnt. Anyone deal with something like this or know what's up?

Can I just replace the fixture or is there something more dangerous going on?
    pic attached.

    Thanks in advance.

The wires should have been connected with a wire nut, not electrical tape.

The wire will have to be cut back and connected properly.

The wire looks like it might have insulation worn off where it's touching the clamp where it enters the box.

        Short answer, call an electrician.

Call your insurance company, increase your fire coverage, fix it your self and then put a 500 Watt light in the fixture. Get wife and kids out....
