  • Happy 50th birthday Randall Cunningham

One of the most exciting Eagles I have had the pleasure to watch play.

Good piece on nfl.com about him today.

He is easily the most exciting and explosive weapon the eagles had in my lifetime.

    Maybe Stan Walters....

He is definitely the most athletic QB I have seen in my lifetime .

Can you imagine if Andy had been his head coach?

Andy made shinola from shit. While Donnie was a nice QB, under Andy Randall could have been one of the best ever.

Amazing player, Cam Newton reminds me of Cunningham. I remember talking on the phone with my dad after they drafted him. I lived in Sacramento and that's how I would get Eagle news. Calling my dad after he read the Inquirer or Daily news. "The Eagles drafted a QB in the 2nd round a colored kid". That term was PC when he grew up no so much today.

It's nice to see history being kind to Randall. He's getting his well deserved due. The new generation really respects how he changed the game. At some point, it's not unrealistic to imagine he'll end up in Canton... stats be damned.

And one can dream. RCII looks like the apple didn't fall far from the tree. Time will tell. But wouldn't it be so awesome if in about 6 years from now, a new Randall Cunningham dons an Eagles #12 jersey and plays lights out for Chip Kelly?

While that would be amazing I would hope 6 years from now we have some sort of QB figured out.

i was very young during the randall cunningham area, but from what i understand dude couldn't read a defense. if he had played when there was 24/7 coverage, he would have been way more highly scrutinized for this. donovan was actually a lot better at reading defenses than randall.

You said it yourself. You were very young. Randall was never coached in his early years. There's a video on nfl.com where Randall himself explains it best. Late in his career on the Vikings he became accomplished at reading defenses. Proper coaching will do that for someone.

that i won't dispute. but judging from what i remember/have seen of his 98 season, and what billick did after the 98 season, i was inclined to think that a lot of randall's success with the vikings was due to the fact that he could chuck the ball up to possibly the best WR tandem ever.

edit: ellsworth presents a good point that a player has to show some initiative in that department.

he also didn't study on his own though. gotta be a self starter. i remember a story about 1 of the assistant coaches gave him a few game tapes to take home that night and study. he put something in 1 of them, like a piece of tape or marker that would fall out or move if the case was ever openend.

RC returned the following day and said the tape was good stuff and he leared a lot, etc and the coach got in his office with them and found the 'marker' intact, which meant he hadn't even opened the cases.

He's the reason I even became an Eagles fan

                        Happy belated, Randall !

I remember when Belicheck had to invevnt the spy position to stop Randall, something that was never heard of in NFL history at the time.

True...between him, Reggie and Buddy, they sealed the deal to me being a true Eagles/football fan.

Damn, I forgot how skinny that fuk was.
