Celek stinks. Tired if him celebrating first downs and dropping tds. Fuck him.

Typically the TE position isn't valued that highly, but ones that can really block and catch have become much more valuable in recent years.
One of the reasons why is that the defense doesn't know what they are going to do on any play. They might block, they might go out, they might fake a block and then go out. That puts big pressure on a defense

With a WR, the defense pretty much knows they are going out and aligns themselves accordingly.

Think of it this way - IF the Eagles front office is at least as informed as you are then they know that:

      A) TE's are really important in Chip's offense
      or
      B) Ertz is rated so much higher than anybody else on the board that they had to take him

Either way its probably not a bad pick unless you think they're incompetent

      .

according to domo's column today, that's exactly their strategy. they are taking the guy at the top of their board no matter what position. period.

To be perfectly honest, one of the NovaCare maintainance guys could have run this draft for the Eagles the last 2 days. The heavy lifting was done in the weeks and months leading up to the draft when the Eagles scouted and graded all of the prospects and then set up their draft board.

Since Thursday night, it's just been a matter of crossing off the names of players taken by other teams, then picking the top guy left on their board, position be damned.
if you think that through, it doesn't make sense. you could theoretically end up drafting five tight ends or centers or whatevers.

better strategy would be to consider the top three or four or five and take the biggest need. maybe expand the pool each round. top of the board in the first. choose based on need from the top two in the second, top three in the third, etc. that way you get the best of both worlds. no big reaches plus you fill needs. scouting should be the primary driver but there is no reason to be that rigid.

i'll give my opinion but i honestly don't care that much.

not going to waste a lot of time arguing with the large group of people around here who think college kelly walks on water and will defend anything he does.

we also have the gelded stepford types who have no opinion other than "give chip a chance". that's boring plus a waste of time since he obviously is getting a chance whatever we say here.

bottom line, i believe they could have improved the team more by using the 36 pick on a different position than tight end. they pick free agents according to needs, why wouldn't you draft according to needs?

Give me a fucking break here.

Good teams consider both need and BPA, but don't let need limit their choices to the extent they pass on what they see as a unique value opportunity.

They obviously think this guy is worth the pick there, and they may very well think Celek isn't as good as they want or want three TE's for their offense.

Just because you think the guy is high school, with no more basis for your bias than those who you refer to as gelded stepford types for theirs, doesn't mean that there is an improper thought process going into that pick.

So you think that if there is another OT or TE on the top of their board, they aren't going to adjust their player position thinking because Domo says so?

              Please.

Please yourself. Kelly said this explicitly. You can make the assumption he's lying if you want. It's certainly possible but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt until he's caught in a lie. (Well, I guess there was that staying at Oregon thing....)

"[Ertz] was at the top of our board," Kelly said matter-of-factly. "We don't want to manufacture things as we go.

"I don't think you can go in and say we need this and we need that. I think when people do that, they get off schedule. You can't force it. In this situation, we had our fingers crossed that our top guy [Ertz] would be there when we got to the third pick [of the round]."

"We've spent a lot of time and invested a lot of man-hours in the evaluation of this process and we're going to continue to follow [our board]," Kelly said.

"The people that make mistakes are the ones that jump around when they look at it and say, 'Hey, we need this position. So even though this kid has a lower grade, we're going to jump it and go here.'

"When you look at the history of it, when that stuff happens, that's where you make mistakes. You've got to trust the work you've put in to this point and let it unfold the way it unfolds."

I think that's the most likely reason. Celek could be a goner.

I disagree about Celek, my opinion he plays a very nice tight end although not in 2010 when we needed him most. Hustles and plays hard and makes the blocks and the catch. I.E. more important postions to fill with the EARLY SECOND ROUND PICK but I am still keeping the faith that Kelly knows a lot more about this guy (since he played against him for 3 - 4 years) and cherry picked him.
