Once again, big schools. No Division III nonsense.

Yea, Westbrook sucked. Jerry Rice blew.

        They were Div. II.

        I kid.

The Eagles were a little too heavy in the "we're smarter than you" small school players over the years, IMO.

We still need a little more SEC from the big school. Only one this year.

          easy to remember the hits

and forget the far greater number of misses. for every westbrook, the team drafted and signed so many other small players and lower division players that were simply camp fodder. westbrook was the exception (as was Jerry Rice and others). it's great when you find that guy, but more often than not, the result is expected.

Well in Reid/Banner/Howie or Heckert case it was just a matter of time when they were going to find that diamond in the rough based on their drafting habits. But it doesn't mean that's the way to go.

They had more misses than hits with the top division schools in the earlier rounds if anything.

I don't know much about Jones, but Wing can punt. He was a weapon for LSU.

                First Draft with the Kelly/Roseman/Gamble

Is a solid one, by the looks of it they followed the BPA mantra. Johnson moves into the RT position, sliding Herremans to Guard. If the health of the O-line does not come into play it should be a strength.

There does not seem to be any true "reaches" in this draft. All of the picks come from major programs where they were productive and leaders of their college teams.

Moving up to draft Matt Barkley, was a mild surprise but could be Our starting QB in year two with coaching. Dispelling the running QB need to run Kelly's offense.

I love the idea of 3 TE's Celek, Casey and Ertz with McCoy, Jackson and Maclin will be fun to watch and Kelly's form of Smash mouth football.

I agree the defense is going to be a work in progress and I hope with coaching and a cohesive Plan they can put a competitive team on the field. With a new Secondary, new scheme and a bunch of new pieces it is going to take time.

We are in year one of a major rebuild of the Eagles organization, there is no magic that is going to cure this team in 1 off-season. Sit back and enjoy the ride cause it is going to take another year for Kelly to put everything in. A third of the roster is going to be new this year and the next, after that we should see what Kelly can do.

What small school diamonds are we talking about?

                  Westbrook and Herremans..... who else?

                  Todd Pinkston
                  Trey Darilek
                  Ryan Moats
                  Kenyatta Marshall
                  Chris Gocong
                  Rashad Barksdale
                  Joe Mays
                  Andy Studebaker
                  Quinton Demps
                  Brian Smith
                  Clay Harbor
                  Jaiquain Jarrett
                  Curtis Marsh

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while. FF was a terrible evaluator of talent.

And the only reason they knew about Westbrook was because he was playing in their backyard.

                      That's not the point.

The point is that a good personnel guy can draft kids from Bemidji State and find players.

The Eagles missed on just about everything the last ten years, big schools/conferences and otherwise, except for the occasional blind squirrel nut in the dirt.

I don't care where a player comes from, as long as he can play.

Yeah. Because the exception is the rule, right?

I laughed watching the new big kid on a video over at pravda. The D Tackle from LSU. Spuds said he never attended a big time college football game having gone to Temple. The kid laughed and called Temple "High School" football.

Not saying small school guys can't make it, but the already long odds are made even longer. It smacks of the "We're smarter than you" bullshit that has exited the building. Thank goodness!

this draft looks good on the surface but it is unreasonable to evaluate it so early. they drafted a bunch of guys who were good in college, but that's the case with every draft. i understand that some drafts have more questionable picks than others. but do we really know, a couple days after the draft, why some guys were picked, where they rated on other teams' boards, if they were roseman or kelly picks? the answer is no. more importantly, we don't know whether or not they will be good. the last time everyone loved a draft was 06. that draft ended up sucking. but it also doesn't make sense to say that eagles constantly missed over the past ten years. were that the case, they wouldn't have made the playoffs as recently as 2010, and wouldn't have even gone 8-8 in 2011. every team has bad picks. the patriots traded up to draft chad jackson. the draft is fun and i'm interested in the future of the eagles but you really have to withhold judgment at this point.

                            No it doesn't

A savy personnel guy can find talent at any school. AND know whether it's worth drafting the kid or waiting until he's a free agent.

I seem to remember FF missing on guys from Michigan and other powerhouses as well as small schools.
