  • McNabb in Hall of Fame, number retired by Eagles?

Ray Didinger says no, and I agree.

If they would have given the man any type of support we would be talking about our trophy case...

The receivers he had were pathetic

I just never could understand why they didn't get him some better weapons. If I was to guess, it probably had to do with philosophy and how much they wanted to spread the ball around to 25 different people. Look what happened when they finally got a ballsy WR: Super Bowl appearance.

wasn't this question answered like 5 years ago? it's almost laughable to suggest that mcnabb would make the HOF. a guy with his numbers would need a ring, possibly multiple rings to get in. he was one of the best QBs in the league for a few years but the HOF is extremely selective. no way he ever gets in.

as far as his number being retired, that is usually reserved for HOF players, but he did change the culture of the eagles. i could see it happening, but not for a while.

i don't disagree that he needed better weapons but the TO thing is a fallacy. he didn't play until the super bowl in those playoffs. mcnabb killed it with freddie mitchell, westbrook, and LJ smith catching his passes in the divisional and conference rounds.

If the Eagles had gone on to win the championship ... that becomes the most famous play in Eagles history and probably gets the same overall status as the Immaculate Reception.

But, none of the McNabb area teams won it, and the quarterback always takes the hit.

And Terrell Owens had nothing to do with The Eagles....

....having homefield advantage in those games you mention and moreover having homefield advantage in those games you mentioned means nothing.

Atlanta and Minnesota weren't no juggernauts either. At that time I don't think there were ever a Dome team that went to a SB beating a team on the road to get there. Just saying.
Plus you have to admit that T.O. brought a swagger to the 2004 Eagles. Even without T.O. in the playoffs they knew and were very confident that they were going to the SB. You have to admit T.O. brought something special to that team.

The Eagles should have had homefield advantage even if TO wasn't on that team. They went 12-4 the previous two years.

                        Edit to add:

Still, had TO been at 100% the entire playoffs and Super Bowl there's a very good chance they would have won it.

In the Minnesota game - an 8-8 team coached by Mike Tice - McNabb, not for the last time in his career, threw a pass in bounds short of the end zone at the end of the half with no time outs, thus neither scoring a touchdown nor getting a field goal attempt. McNabb had the knack, in the words of Charlie Brown, of being deft and clumsy at the same time.

meh. they also had homefield in 02 and 03 without TO. and, as wynnron mentioned the NFC was horrendous in 04. the eagles beat a falcons team led by mike vick to the super bowl. mike vick's number 1 receiver was peerless price. and to get to the NFC title game, both the eagles and the falcons beat teams that finished 8-8 in the regular season. there was never more disparity between the NFC and the AFC than there was in 2004.
