  • Opinions about Hotel f-up

    Ok... here's the story.

My family planned a early dinner for my birthday Sunday. My GF and I checked into a decent hotel (not the Loews... want to make sure that's clear) around 3:30.

My GF and I go out to dinner and when we get back around 10 PM there is a letter slipped under the door saying they are going to have to turn off the water the next day from 10 AM to 2 PM.

This was a pain in the azz because our train back was scheduled at 1PM. We were planning to check out at noon and catch the train.

Fortunately we were able to use the bathroom facilities at my mom's place but had to check out two hours earlier than we wanted... Plus my mom had to come get us at the hotel. I didn't want have to bother her on Monday.

Question: Should I expect compensation for this?

I would definitely b*tch about it to management

Explain the situation and how inconvenient it was. Maybe you'll get a discount the next time you're in town. Maybe they'll take something off of this bill (or a refund). Couldn't hurt to try.

If they warned you when you checked in - OK.
But they did not do so. Thus - I would do what TGP suggests.

Good point-- they did not tell me this before I checked in.

          What time was checkout?

If they warned you at any point prior to check in, it might be ok - at check in or (as it turns out) later that day, is simply unacceptable. Half the reason you get a hotel is for the home conveniences of a shower, toilet, etc.

Honestly, they owe you a refund for a day in my opinion (or a free 1 night stay). You are fortunate it wasn't at a location where you didn't have alternatives.

Oh the inconveniences of the 1 percenters!

Did they boot you out at 10am or was the issue of no running water for those 2 hours? If the former I would definitely ask for a discount on next stay. If the latter, I don't see the big inconvenience, unless you were sleeping in until 10am.

                Noon.

My plan was to check out right at noon and get to the train station to take a departure at a little after 1 PM.

I probably could have dealt with it better but my girlfriend doesn't like to be without bathroom facilities she can't flush. And the whole hotel was in that situation.

Like I said to slag... it's more of an issue for the GF than me.

And to be honest I would have slept in later otherwise.

If ordinary checkout is noon (and not eleven, which is most hotels IME), you have a little better argument that they should have told you sooner.

Giving you water until an hour before checkout isn't as bad as two hours but neither is crazy fucked up.

You might want to find out what precipitated the shut off first because if it was an emergency that put them in a position where they couldn't reasonably advise you sooner, you'd have a tougher argument.

Regardless, I'd squeak and see if I got any oil.

yeah my wife would've been pissed about something like that

I guess the time to ask for a discount would've been at checkout tho. Still worth writing a letter to the hotel manager - they will likely throw a bone your way

The letter which I retained says they are going to do this Monday through Wednesday.

Was vague about the reason why but did not mention an emergency. It says, and I quote:

                        "Dear Valued Guest,
Unfortunately the water will be turned off in the hotel on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 10am to 2pmn while we make the necessary repairs to a mechanical problem. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We are using the YMCA as an alternative for your bathing needs. If you shall need transportation we will be more than happy to provide it."

I paid about $200 for this room...it included breakfast for two so subtract that. It's a decent hotel but I think this is unacceptable.

I'd leave an upper decker in the toilet.

                          Guaranteed.

and, steal 10 towels like we did from that killer Days Inn that irish george recommended in cherry hill about 15 years ago. MEMORIES!

Upper Decker is funny, but I always like to treat the housekeeping staff well at any hotel I am staying it .

It's the right thing to do and typically it pays off.

The context appears to indicate they knew about this for awhile.
