McNabb is one depressing sad sack

For me, the more a guy says he "never let anything get up under [his] skin" you know it's bothering him on a deep level. Typically I would stay away from beating the McNabb horse, but there are some interesting nuggets in the released parts of the interviews.

I cannot believe that this guy lasted in this city for as long as he did. By far the softest most sensative pro athlete in this city's history.

Soft? I never saw that in McNabb, even if there was a fraction of softness there I'd like to remind you to look at the last two years of Eagles football if you are looking for King Softy.

I have mixed feelings about McNabb.

I actually think FF and Joe Banner are more to blame for the failure of the Eagles to win a Super Bowl than McNabb is.

Having said this: Could he have done better? Undoubtedly.

Was he lacking the quality around him to succeed? With the exception of 2004, probably yes.

I think a better F.O. could have won a Super Bowl during the McNabb area.

I believe if he never broke his foot in 2002 he would have won a Super Bowl in Philadelphia. After the break there was the Tampa fiasco, when he was far from 100 percent healthy, then he played like shit for the first half of 2003, then came the Carolina fiasco broken rib and all. Psychologically he was never the same player after he came back from the break.

I supported and defended McNabb longer than an avg. Eagles fan.

I most say though, being in the media is not helping my perception of him, nor his legacy ( at least in the short term).

I think Ruben Frank called it right when he said that McNabb has a persecution complex. Recently, he said it wouldn't bother him if the fans boo him when he is honored this year. Why couldn't he say, "no, I don't think they'll boo me... not with my body of work... yada yada yada???"

Hate to say it, but I'd rather see him just go away for a while.

Sad thing is he could have even been better if he employed a Tom Brady/Peyton Manning like work ethic. Instead of chasing dog toys every spring and summer and bulking up, if he had worked at the great facility that was there for him and spent time perfecting his game and timing. Things might have been different.

Sure he could have had a better supporting cast. But without Westbrook think about how bad he might have been. I put 75 percent of not winning a super bowl in those years square on 5's shoulders. the other 25 percent on management. Brady no mater the wrs seems to rise elevate his team.

A lot of people thought i was just a McNabb hater. Not true. I just think if someone is given God given talent and doesnt use that talent to the fullest extent its just disgusting.

I was in the same boat for a long time. For me, the guy built up a lot of benefit-of-the-doubt points during that time. Unfortunately, every time I've heard anything about him since, it's tarnished that more and more.

It doesn't make me angry or hate him. It just makes me kinda sad.

Totally agree with this. What's more reprehensible in an athlete: arrogance or indifference?

Please ... your revisionist backpedaling is transparent ... McNabb is the biggest reason the Eagles had chance to win a Super Bowl ... not 75 percent of the reason they didn't win one.

That's how much I wanted him to succeed. I think he was (and is) a product of Andy Reid (FF). FF tried to fit a square peg in a round hole (horizontal BS passing game) and it really hurt McNabb. The one time that they went out and actually got a receiver (TO) that could compliment McNabb's talents and strong arm, they go out and play in a Super Bowl. Donte Stallworth is the only other example of them trying to do something to compliment 5, but he was always f'ed up with hamstring issues. FF also instilled this smug, condesending, us-against-them attitude against the fans (and by extension the media).
