OT : New York Igglephans and Slizz

Read online that the fast food workers in your cities (among others) are supposed to go on strike today. They're asking for union representation, and a raise from $7.25 to $15.00 an hour. Is it going down ?

Wonderful idea. I mean, it takes a Mensa member to flip burgers right? Their jobs will be filled by dinner tonight.

That mentality is the exact problem with this country

Let some poor person do the work for pennies, then bitch about them being poor.

The CEO to Employee wages scale has gone from 100 to 1 to 1000 to 1

      Does that make sense?

I have not heard anything about it here in St. Louis.

SE: What I think you're ignoring here is that $7.25 really isn't a livable wage anymore. I believe Costco's minimum is $15. They did it by choice because they recognized the problem.

            Not that high these days

            Actually peaked in 2000 at ~ 380 to 1.

That's ultimately the issue...but the other thing that is being ignored is that these jobs are meant to be entry level intending to move up. They are not jobs expected to support a family anywhere in the country, let alone in a city where the living wages are much much higher.

Ok so a 1000 to 1 was extreme, surprising that 2000 was the top out year.

IMHO Minimum wage needs to be the next thing adjusted in this Country.

Still not sure if that will get some of the lazy folks off their ass, but it is worth a shot and most employers can afford it.

However, in NYC, they'll have trouble buying McDonalds on a McDonalds entry level wage.

These aren't really career jobs are they? No one should be trying to make a living off of burger cooking. They were traditionally jobs for teenagers and college students. If their rate doubles, these places will have to charge 10 bucks for a burger. Which means going out of business. Then no jobs.

Didn't a plan for making trades schools more affordable get shot down? Kind of a mixed message then, no?

So did a voucher program to send your kid where you like. I'm pretty sure we dump quite a bit of money for school. Either way a private company shouldn't have to double someones pay for an unskilled position.

Corporations and their execs have no interest in the stakeholders that do the jobs that make them money and allow for the high exec pay. Symptom of American business philosophy.

Like Walmart family that is worth $18 Billion each, yet a substantial number of their workforce is on medicaid and SNAP. Govt. Handouts to Big Business

I know, no one is responsible for making themselves successful.

As for handouts, I agree, businesses shouldn't get them. Individuals or other countries either.

But they are responsible for where they grew up, their access to education and training - especially as children, their access to affordable transportation and healthcare, etc.

And businesses aren't responsible for abusing their labor force just because they can. Their responsibility is to their profit margin and the return on investment of their shareholders - the real people that make the engine of business run.
