Further pussification of the NFL if he does. What would he suggest next - pads to protect their shoulders?

Maybe the government should step in and have osha inspect safety equipment like other industries.

Thats an old article. C'mon govt, time to tighten up the safety standards. Where is the osha handbook for this? Perhaps an employee makes a "dangerous"cut and gets hurt, he can be responsible for getting fined and perhaps even having the employer fined as well for not teaching and implementing safe route-running standards.

But i'd prefer not to have a govt agency micromanage my business and ongoings. I'm not one to depend on the govt for anything other than protection from foreign agressors. It's a crazy notion, explosive violent contact sports can be detrimental to your well being despite the potential of being lucrative. Maybe the surgeon general can step in and put stickers on all the helmets.

Seeing as they haven't put a stop to football I wouldn't worry. Football is an obvious exception to basic workplace safety though. Just like the military. If compensation for professional athletes wasn't so high then perhaps there should be regulations to protect workers.

Amateur athletes on the other hand don't have the benefit of high salaries. Should they have protection?

Protection by who and from what? If you are choosing to do something you love and you hurt yourself doing it, why should anyone else (including govt)be responsible for it? If I go outside and tear my knee up in a pickup game, shouldn't that be on me? I don't and never have understood the heavy reliance on the govt. Perhaps a privately funded health insurance fund for aspiring athletes? I don't pretend to know all the answers but expecting the govt to make everything right And be the answer to all problems isn't a good thing, again mho.

The government isn't the answer to all the problems, but it serves a purpose for safety. I'm not saying the government should dictate the rule of the NFL. OSHA has rules to protect workers in the workplace - but its protection from negligence and unnecessary/unknown risk.

In terms of professional and especially amateur sports, the purpose of any oversight should be on making sure that information regarding possible health risks are made known and if possible mitigated.

There will always be dangerous jobs that people voluntarily partake in. Voluntary is the key, and knowing what you're getting yourself into is necessary for that to work.

And that doesn't mean a player has to go through a medical journal or talk to a series of doctors to find out dangers of concussions - it should be blatantly obvious and available information.
