  • How much tip do you leave for take out?

Drew Brees gave three bucks on a $74 ticket.

I double the NYC sales tax and add it to the bill. I'll round up to the next dollar.

Frankly, Brees is a cheapskate. Delivering food is not much less work than serving it to you at a table.

Edit-- I misunderstood and am wrong as a result. I thought it was a delivery. Take out I will rarely tip for but I have done so on occasion around the holidays or if I know the person or if they are extra nice.

Woah there, take out is not delivery.

                Muchas gracias.

I don't see the need to automatically tip somebody at a take out place... although this does touch on the question of whether the minimum wage should be increased for workers at these sorts of places.

Yeah but if you're drew brees and you're going to bother to tip, you can't be leaving three bucks.

Well, I guess I should scale back on my take out tips after reading the comments here... I would have given the take out server around 5-7 bucks. Mostly because I know they get paid well below the minimum wage... is that right?

It probably depends on the place.

Like at McDonald's they are probably making minimum wage. Other non corporate type places, IDK. If I knew somebody was making the majority of their income off of tips, I would tip them. I've tipped people at McDonald's before and they have always been flummoxed so I don't do it anymore.

Corporate places will sometimes forbid you from accepting tips.

Depends how the place is set up. I worked at a dedicated take out spot attached to a bar for beer and take-out food. Made well above minimum wage. The bartenders did not because they get the tips.

Fuck me if you don't subscribe to the George Costanza philosophy of tipping for take out.

I've tipped at Outback and places like that with curb side take out. I still think 5 bucks is good on a $75 order. Less than 10% (7.5%).
