  • I'm not downplaying what Cooper said...but...

you all know as well as I do that athletes say stuff about other races all the time and just never get caught. News flash: The NFL is completely loaded w/ players that have zero class...not to mention they aren't very smart. It really amazes me that people continue to be suprised by what these clowns say and do.

On top of stupid, it was cowardly

I wonder, drunk or not, if Cooper would have made such a statement at a Chris Brown concert?

What better way to combat/condemn racism than with sexism.

you like the word coward better, fine

interesting you don't seem to have that much of a problem with Cooper using the N word but take exception to the P word.

            Irony indeed.

500 internet fights, that's the number I figured when I first joined igglephans. 500 internet fights and you could consider yourself a legitimate internet-tough guy. You need them for experience, to develop leather skin. So I got started. Of course along the way you stop thinking about being tough and all that. It stops being the point. You get past the silliness of it all. But then...after...you realize that's what you are.

Yep, I'm the guy that never speaks out about racism especially in this case. You're the guy that never goes off on rants due to moral outrage.

                EDIT:

I also use the p-word more than I should. I was just pointing out the irony of your statement.

IG, if it makes you feel better...do your thing and rant on BUT if you think Cooper is the only one who does this shit (black or white), you are very ignorant. Cooper got caught...

I found the most irony in the fact that he's disgusted by the cowardice of the guy who wouldn't say something offensive directly to the face of the would-be-offended party...so he calls him a pussy on the internet.

My first impulse was that Cooper should be cut. But plenty of players openly make homophobic comments without being penalized. Asante's comments that he "didn't want his kids to see that" were equally ignorant. Eve Gronk only stopped one step short when he said he'd be fine with a gay teammate "as long as they were respectful," as though a "disrespectful gay teammate would fellate him against his will. In this case Cooper's punishment will be facing black players for the rest of his career.

its true, that's not a great word to use, it shouldn't be used and I do see the irony.

that said, Im still struggling with your stated opinion that a media firestorm sure to die down when the next one comes along will cause Riley Cooper more problems than an ongoing relationship with his co-workers, the vast majority of whom are black. Seems like you want to have it both ways when you attack my admittedly poor use of the P word.

                          That is all.

am I missing something? And does the fact "he was just caught" excuse it or mean he should not suffer the consequences?

My point is that, like the Mike Vick situation, the media and fans are probably going to make a bigger deal about this because we're not intimately involved. We don't know Cooper - if it's a constant behavior or a one-off. We don't have to deal with him day to day and his presence offers us no direct benefit.

If it really is his persona, then I expect him to be gone sooner than later. If it's not then I expect him to stick around. I know know him so I can't say for sure with one incident.

Historically, though, NFL teams have put up with a lot of scum in the locker room - for things that I think are worse than drunkedly yelling a slur.

I was making the irony point just to show how much people let slide (including myself) when we should know better.
