Kelly said today to reporters that they are trying to determine if the turf could be part of the reason for 3 torn ACL in 2 weeks, according to reports on twitter...

"the N.F.L.’s Injury and Safety Panel has found that the rate of anterior cruciate ligament injuries is 88 percent higher in games played on FieldTurf than on grass."http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2...ieldturf/?_r=0

Here is another article on fieldturf.com that says fieldturf is actually safer.http://www.fieldturf.com/en/fieldtur.../proven-safety

Maybe Chip could ask his Sports Science Coordinator to look into it if he's not to busy picking out what def leppard track to play at practice.

In all seriousness, the surface players play on may have a relationship to ACL injuries. But changing the surface will never eliminate ACL injuries.

These guys lhave to cut on a dime and that puts a lot of stress on the ACL. More research on the shoe-surface interface is needed.

I would be interested in seeing a study on ACL injuries vs. position in the NFL. My guess is that the players who have to change direction the most would be the most prone to an ACL injury.

The devil is always in the details...in the Field Turf-funded study we get the following statement from the Conclusions section

"No significant differences in head, knee, or shoulder trauma
          were observed between playing surfaces."

Too many variables to arrive at a decisive conclusion about fake vs real imo
