Vick’s the starter, and it was a no brainer for Chip if he is to maintain any credibility at all. He said the starter would emerge in the preseason, and Vick clearly has.
Whether you like it or not, Vick is still a legend in the minds of some young players. I think that is unfortunate, but it is what it is. It may be a cultural thing, a generational thing, a gangsta thing, or whatever, but it is true. I believe that’s true for DJax and to a lesser extent for Shady. How could this coaching staff possibly have sold Foles over Vick to them? Certainly not based on their preseason performance.
With that said, my first problem with Vick is that he is not self-motivated. He plays well with a chip (no pun intended) on his shoulder or when he’s got something to prove. He does not play well when he feels comfortable. The great quarterbacks compete with themselves to be the best they can be—not because they aspire to beat out the Nick Foles or Kevin Kolbs of the world. Chip’s quarterback competition may have brought out the best in Vick, but now let’s see if he can maintain that performance.
My second problem with Vick is that he is not the most cerebral student of the game I’ve ever seen. Alright, he’s fucking stupid. But Vick will perform better in Chip’s offense because it doesn’t take an Einstein to run it. Vick clearly was way over his head in the FF’s offense. You could see him thinking, and thinking poorly. His confusion was readily apparent. In Chip’s offense, Vick will have less to think about. He will have one or two decisions to make in each play, not twenty. He will rely more on instinct than intellect.
If he stays healthy, he really could thrive in this offense.
