I'm glad they caught that scumbag. This happens all the time, people being assaulted for their phones. There are measures that could make these crimes pointless and assaults like this one eliminated. Unfortunately handset manufacturers and service providers have little incentive to do so. Cell phone theft is not only profitable for the thief but the Carriers as well. If a stolen phone cannot access a network it becomes useless. When it becomes useless it also becomes worthless. When something is worthless criminals no longer steal them. They're coming around but far too slowly.

With all due respect (and I'm glad they caught him also) the point of my post was not the logistical issues surrounding apprehending cell phone thieves in general ... but rather was focused on the hilarious way in which this twit made them unnecessary.
