  • Watching Julius Thomas play last night made me wonder

There have to be many dozens, even hundreds, of 6'4"-6'7" hulks playing D1 (or D2 or D3) basketball that have no shot of playing pro ball but are athletic enough to play college ball, which in truth about 2% of NFL tight ends and defensive ends could do. Why doesn't the NFL look at more of these guys as projects. It's been done before. Shit, the Eagles a 26 year old fireman.

What a load that Thomas is. Manning must be having wet dreams. Bet he's glad he didn't stump to bring Dallas Clark in.

I think the NFL does look at plenty of those guys. Tony Gonzalez was the original. Antonio Gates was another. Now we have Jimmy Graham and Julius Thomas. There are some failed projects like Lance Kendricks, and I think the Giants brought in a guy from the 06 George Mason team who didn't work out. Zach Ertz may not have played basketball, but he fits the bill of the athletic WR/TE hybrid.

For the same reason that track stars aren't filling NFL rosters as wide receivers.
