Unlike others I refuse to head for the lifeboats after three games, but in the wake of Thursday's -- is Debacle II too strong a name -- I suddenly flashed back to one of IG's favorite coaches, Gerry Faust.
Google him, younguns, because we old timers remember him well. Came out of Moeller High School in Ohio as the greatest thing since sliced bread. One day he gets "The Call" -- Notre Dame says, "We want you!" Faust is the star of press conferences with every media outlet going -- a high school coach with no major college coaching experience.
He's a rah-rah guy who wins his first game and the Irish are voted the number 1 team in the country...but it was all downhill from there. He resigned rather than being fired after five seasons, the third losingest coach in Notre Dame history.
Fast forward to 2013 -- Chipper comes out of Oregon as the greatest thing since sliced bread. One day he gets "The Call" -- the Eagles say, "We want you!" Chip is the star of press conferences with every media outlet going -- a college coach with no NFL coaching experience.
He's a rah-rah guy who wins his first game -- and it's been downhill from there.
Yeah -- it's just three games -- but still still. Sorry, I just had to bring it up. The similarities are just too striking.
