blame lawyers and the culture of litigation. It's only like this because players can successfully sue a few years after they retire. I don't know if they changed the language in all contracts to connote that they are entering into a dangerous activity and are at risk, but also don't know if that would even matter. cigarette package warnings didn't seem to protect the tobacco industry.

Like most things wrong with this country, it begins with law firms and courts.

I don't know if its fair to single out lawyers, courts and law firms, but our society has become a culture of litigation.

They aren't hitting because they risk getting fined. They risk getting fined because the league is trying to prevent head injuries. The league is trying to minimize head injuries because retired players are suing the league because of head injuries during their career.

It's not hard to understand. Without the lawsuits the nfl would be business as usual. If the NFL doesn't do something about head injuries and the lawsuits they give rise, the league will be out of business in short order.

            follow the money

Litigation is only part of it and even if all the lawyers disappeared, we'd still have a huge push toward safety
And the reason is the same reason the NFL does everything- money

As the NFL becomes more and more beholding to the networks and advertisers, they keep making changes to appease their high-paying customers

The networks lose ratings when Tom Brady gets hurt and we're talking about big dollars at stake for each rating point

When Brady got hurt, new rules were enacted and Robert Kraft famously stated:

"A Patriot game without Brady is a like going to see Lethal Weapon without Mel Gibson"

Its entertainment and the entertainment industry lives and dies with the Stars they pimp. When the Stars go down, there is no reason for the casual fans to watch, so the rating go down.
The diehards will tune in no matter what, but the NFL caters to the casuals because that's the demographic that puts them over the top on the money side

They don't give a rats ass about serious fans; those they take for granted

And now that the "old players" settled for $765 million, the League is already busy ramping up the effort to go to an 18 game season....mo' money for the owners; safety and litigation be damned

They won't stop until they've fucked over every aspect of the game we love in pursuit of mo money.

How many yachts can you water-ski behind Gordon, how much is enough ?

            Fuck them

The only way it stops is when the fans decide to finally organize and wield their clout as the paying customers

NFLFU = NFL Fans Union and an incredibly apropos acronym

            .

Business is always about the bottom line but there's something more fundamental at play here. Over the last year or so with head injury revelations rising, many parents are having second thoughts about allowing their kids to play pee wee and high school football. Even ex pros have gone on record discouraging their own children from playing.

When kids stop playing, it's only a matter of time before the game disappears. Put another way, if safety concerns aren't successfully addressed, American football will be played with a round ball like the rest of the civilized world.

Football has gone down this road before. Teddy Roosevelt came within a whisker of banning it altogether in the early years of 1900 when players were dying on the field. His directive led to the formation of the NCAA to fix safety problems.

The way things were going, a modern pro player was destined to die on the field. Nobody wants to see that, even the die hard fan.
