Mainly because he said it during halftime of a nationally televised game. It doesn't seem like something the network or the league would approve of.

I actually think the network was in on it. Didn't he end the segment by directing people who wanted to know more to an NBC website?

His anti-gun segment got his name (and thus NBC's name) attached to a hot-button issue, which drew attention to his Sunday Night broadcast. I think NBC saw this and decided it's not a bad way to try for a ratings bump.

The NFL doesn't sign Coastas' paychecks - NBC does. I think at this point it's commonly accepted that controversy equals ratings, so I'm not surprised at all.

I agree with Dan Drives a Van. I read PFT a lot (NBC owns it now) and a lot of readers there have pointed out how the site has been constantly pushing the issue.
