  • Whether it's Foles as "the" QB moving forward or not

they have to pick up a read option model as either the future starter or backup.

Nothing that Matt Barkley has shown thus far instills confidence that he could serve as a winning backup QB in the fast-paced Chip system.

I don't think teams are going to be running read option a whole lot going forward. It has a lot of tendencies to get your qb killed. I really could see it going the way of the wildcat.

get ahead of the curve, ditch the read option and go with the pocket Qb. That guy is on the roster already, so then we can build defense instead of another qb.

7 out of the 8 teams that are in 1st place in their division are lead by pocket QBs.

Seriously? He's a rookie who takes no 1st team reps.

Washington, San Fran, Seattle, Carolina and Eagles (w/ Vick)

Those are the teams that run a read option consistently.

San Fran, Seattle and Carolina are all playoff teams. If you have a QB who can be smart with that offense, it's effective. Russ Wilson and Kap run it smart, Cam doesn't get hit that much but it also helps that he is huge.

Vick and RG3 don't protect themselves like the other guys.

I guess the other takeaway is that San Fran, Seattle and Carolina all have elite Ds.

I don't think that every single play should be a read option, but there's definite benefits to having it in your playbook. I'd think a guy (not just Mariota, any guy) who has been running it for 2+ years in college with no real injury history knows how to pick their battles and protect themselves appropriately.
