This is about as exciting to me as when they brought back Doug Glanville.

I miss the days when we had a GM in town who wouldn't sign anyone over 30.

But I'm hoping he's going cheap on the OF because he's going to make a serious push for Tanaka. Guy looks like the next Yu Darvish.

What the hell was Amaro doing while working for Gillick? Clearly he wasn't learning what it takes to be a good GM.

The infield of this team is old and injury prone. They have no catcher. The bullpen is a mess. They have big time holes in the rotation.

They should be following the path of the Sixers and to a lesser extent the Eagles and rebuild the roster. Instead, they're following the path of the Flyers and adding more meh pieces to a meh team.

Depending on what else Amaro does this winter, this might suggest he is conceding as much, which would almost be a relief. 2014 looks to be a mess, so why would you sign an over-30 star like Ellsbury to a huge deal when the team is probably years and many players away from contention? Better to get short-term placeholders like Byrd.

If Amaro did want to make a splash, a guy like Tanaka makes sense. He's in his mid-twenties, "only" costs money and no draft picks or players, and by all accounts looks like the real deal. Could be a rotation centerpiece for years. No idea if he'd want to come to Philadelphia, but maybe a blank check persuades him.

It's typical Amaro...jumping the gun and setting the market in Free Agency by rewarding a guy in his late 30's coming off a flukey season. He really is a special kind of hack.

The only positive is, it's only 2 years, and this move means they won't spend $100 mil on Ellsbury.

Hopefully it also means they won't even consider Beltran.

If he's bench strength ... fine.

If the numbers are true, 2 years, $16 million seems like too much for a bench player.

Per Eskin/twitter, Amaro is deep in talks to move Brown+ for Jose Bautista.
