    Were the team named the:

Blackskins, Brownskins, Whiteskins, or Yellowskins intead of the Redskins it would be history!

The spell checker flagged all the names except Redskins as misspelled!

      Another thought!

If the Native Americans had a huge Bloc of Democratic Votes, "Redskins" would also be history!

Uhh, Obama is already working on it.

Oneida Indian Nation representative Ray Halbritter, the public face of a campaign against the Washington pro football club's team name, thanked President Barack Obama for speaking out on the issue during a meeting at the White House Tuesday.

Halbritter's comments were met with applause from leaders of a dozen tribes who spoke with the president about a range of economic development issues important to Indian Country, from job creation to increased access to capital to jurisdictional challenges.

They are probably going to have to be forced by the government on this like had to be done to get them to finally integrate. What a shameful and disgusting history that team represents.

            Why Is The Pope Catholic?

You might as well ask that as well if you're going to broach questions with what should be obvious answers.

Of course, as you undoubtedly know, "why is the Pope Catholic" is a question that does NOT have an obvious answer and is one which has been debated in the western world for at least the last 500 years.

                Well, Gee, Buffalo Boy...

...since the Pope is the head of the Catholic Church, ya think it might be just a tad strange if the College of Cardinals met in secret conclave and chose a Methodist, a Baptist or an Episcopalian?

Is the Pope Catholic is not the same thing as Why is the Pope Catholic, which was your question. I'm sorry, but I can only read the English language as written. If you butcher it, I can't help that.

By the way, I don't know. You're the one who used to be an Anglican and then converted. Why don't you tell me?

                      Personally

I don't get the uproar over the name from the perspective of Skins fans, to be honest. Some folks who say if Snyder changes the name, they'll stop being fans, everyone is attacking us, etc.

To me, the important part is the Washington part; I was born in the D.C. area and they're my team. Did any of you become Eagles fans because the mascot was an Eagle? No. Most of you, I would assume, became Eagles fans because you were born in Philly or the surrounding areas that are generally full of Eagles fans.

I just can't bring myself to care about the name being changed because it's not the half of the name that's important. They could be the Washington Warriors, Generals, RedTails (though that name blows) and I wouldn't care, so long as they're Washington.

Now as to whether the name should be changed, I haven't done nearly enough research to make an informed decision. For every media journalist spouting off (and being derided for white guilt, fairly or not) someone else is trotting out a study that says Native American's aren't offended, and linguists are debating the origin of the word back and forth. I've seen very little proven as a definitive fact one way or the other, though I understand people like DQ using it as a hammer, it's a way to tweak the fan base.

So keep it, change it, means nothing to me either way, so long as Washington is represented.

if the NFL said to lil danny "if you change the name you can keep all the merchandising money for the first 3 years, jerseys, t shirts etc" he would change the name so fast his head would explode for counting the cash

I use it as a hammer... but I also believe it needs to be changed.

What if your team was called the Washington "Slanteyes" with a Chinese person on your helmet? Would you consider that offensive?

Your owner and his people are in denial. History will show this.

Let me ask you this ... answer yes or no ... no equivocating.

Would you go up to a nice little old Native American lady on a reservation and say: Hey redskin, how are you and all the other redskins doing here on this reservation?"

                            EDITED TO ADD:

                            Actually don't answer the question.

You seem like a decent person.

No decent person with any sense of common courtesy would do that.

And that's the end of the discussion about whether an NFL team should have that term as its name.

Fifty years ago, DC's team had another unfortunate distinction: It was the last all-white team in the NFL.
