  • "Gimmick" offense...

I was actually gonna post this before the troll post, but does anyone else feel that there really isn't many "gimmicks" ? They ran the ball 30 times a game with a few misdirection plays here and there. I somewhat disagree that "D Coordinators are gonna figure the Eagles out in the off season" argument.

    Thoughts?

The "gimmick" that would have really impressed me would have been allowing the Saints to score with 90 seconds left to get the ball back. Kelly would have been crucified but that was probably the percentage play.

With all due respect my man...

        I ain't no troll! More of a lingerer...I know I don't post much (hell it's been 4 yrs).

Having said that, I agree with u 100%...a gimmick offense gets shutdown after 3-5 games. Chips offense, with the exception of a few games, consistently went over 400 yds and 25 points.

So to the inevitable douchebag reply by mcnabbhater, go shit in ur hand and educate urself u fool!

Actually, I think the gimmick would have been to pull a Peyton and have an onsides kick that the Saints wouldn't have expected. They wouldn't have had their hands team up there, and if the Saints did recover it, the Eagles could have either let them score or force the situation on 4th down where they would have had a minute and a half or 2 minutes left.

It's a gamble. With 90 seconds they probably take it in. It's not a common strategy in the NFL so I think you can pull it off. But takes some big balls.

No where near a gimmick, but I think you got a glimpse into the kind of offense he wants to run during the first half of the Bears game.

Lot's of misdirection, fast routes, downfield blocking assignments.

Its remotely possible that takes some time to learn and Foles will be more adept in it next year and you will see it more. We will see.

So far. other than always being in GO mode and the signals from the sideline the only "gimmick" I see is CK adjusting his system to fit the player rather than the other way around, which is what everyone else does.

I would bet that there are not two more different QB's in the NFL on a single team than Vick and Foles, but yet it worked, because the "gimmick" was changed.

Also while I'm at it, one more thing, I do find it just a bit ironic that after 14 years of hearing that "I have to do a better job of putting players in a better position"

There is actually a coach that does this!

                  Personnel Drives the Offense

Kelly seems pretty clear that the offense is driven by the personnel. At least that is what he claims right now.

If he is a good coach then the offense will adapt to whatever players they get this off season and he and his staff will counter the changes that the defensive coordinators work on this off season.

The Eagles did well enough this year to suggest that Kelly is a good coach, so I am optimistic. However, next year is a big test.

He plays the numbers, looking for weaknesses to exploit whatever D is on the field. Early in the season press coverage stymied them, but Chip found ways to tweak the O and beat the press. The way he ran the O evolved over the season as he saw more Ds and saw what he needed to do. FF was a system man, Chip is an innovator not wedded to any single 'style' but rather the punch/counter punch. When a D finds a way to stop his O, it means he looks at what they did and finds another way around it. So 'figuring him out' may only be fleeting.

Looking forward to seeing how he approaches off season 2, who goes? Who comes? I just plan to enjoy the ride.

Good thoughts. I can't stand the fact that free agency doesn't start for another 2 months...

Well stated. If Kelly continues to adapt the offense then the offense will remain effective.
