It's bad news for the city as a whole. I did read last night that some believe the lot is not big enough for a stadium, and that regardless of the use, it was just a smart purchase.
I've reacted with skepticism over the other stadium site proposals because those parties did not own an NFL team. This is the first one that I think is interesting.
It's nothing but circumstantial speculation at the moment, though. I know that the native borns I've known for years out here have always preferred the Rams come home instead of stealing a team from another city.
This is clearly only a part of a land deal if a stadium is to be built there. 60 acres isn't big enough on its own. Likely going to purchase part of the adjacent Hollywood Park parcel before it goes into development, but that's just speculation too.
If something happens regarding the Rams returning, it's going to become substantial within a short period of time. If it doesn't, this is just a land grab that can be developed for all sorts of things.
NFL is on record stating they want AFC/NFC in NoCal and AFC/NFC in SoCal
9ers and Raiders cover the NoCal portion and the Rams and Chargers cover the SoCal portion. 9ers are getting a new stadium;, not sure what the Raiders are doing. Chargers need a new stadium too and if they can't get it done here, they'll play in LA using the same rotation that the Jets/Giants use
League doesn't care if Chargers are in SD or LA, but they do want an NFC presence and the Rams are a team that LA fans will embrace.
Hollywood Park + additional 60 acres will likely be developed into an entertainment district with an NFL stadium as the anchor tenant
That guy also buys property for Wal Mart. Said property is close to LAX and there would be a ton of issues regarding aircraft flying directly over a stadium filled w/ people not to mention tremendous aircraft noise during a game. That property will not be where a stadium is built.
According to Google Maps, The Forum is 4 miles from LAX. Raymond James is 6 miles from TPA. The Linc is 6 miles from PHL.
I didn't know the Wal Mart aspect of it, and that may be true, but I don't think the proximity to LAX would be an issue.
Edit: Upon further review, Kroenke bought the land FROM Walmart not for Walmart. His wife is the daughter of Walmart co-founder Bud Walton and he used to sit on the board, but no longer does.
I'm still inclined to believe it's a land grab, mainly because there are some hot sites around here that could be very attractive as opposed to downtown. The biggest one is the old Chrysler plant lot, which has a good amount of land surrounding it.

You'd think that would be the case...check out Petco Park in San Diego (beisbol); its 2 miles from the runway and right under the glide-path on final approach to SAN airport.
NFL will get what it wants; and it wants the Rams in a new stadium in Los Angeles.
That's part of why the Rams made such huge $$ demands to the St. Louis ConVis, they knew the locals wouldn't agree to that largesse and it gives them plausible cover when they make the move back to LA.
And then the NFL will use St Louis as a cautionary tale for any city that balks at paying for a new palace.
Few businesses wield leverage better than the NFL cabal

Isn't citifield a stone's throw from the airport too?

In this case he bought the land FROM wal-mart. They wanted to build a super store on the site but inglewood told them to shove it and would not approve the project.
Al Davis already went through approval of this very site for the Raiders back in the 90s. It passed. LAX is not a detriment. Davis got approval before 9/11, but I don't think flight paths will be a concern post 9/11. Hollywood Park race track has been there for decades.

I know for a fact when landing at Tampa International you could see the stadium clear as day from the runway. It looks to be about 2 miles from Dale Mabry blvd

I'm not sure what to think yet. All I can say is it's intriguing. We'll know soon enough.
