  • Brutally physical defense wins Super Bowls.

The Seahawks had Denver intimidated from the first play. And they never let up.

You can scheme a great offense but great defense takes pure violence.

It helps that the officiating changes from the playoffs on to give the advantage back to the defense.

Still, the Seahawks were the more complete team and should have won. Fuck a Manning, too.

The classic Philly sports fan mindset. It's not right or wrong - it is what it is. Both a shame and a mantle of pride. Love and hate in constant turmoil.

Seattle played at a different speed.

        They covered those quick screens

so well, it forced manning to hold the ball longer and their d just destroyed him all game....actually looked more like Eli than Peyton out there, tipped balls flying around, overthrown picks...

They had defensive linemen running down receivers and running backs from behind before they got 2 yards.

Refs called the same game for Denver.

Yeah for sure, I meant to say quick slants, but they covered everything like crazy.

I know you're talking about Seattle's defense, but taken out of context, this is pretty hilarious.

Agreed. The whole "defense wins championships" is a bit overplayed and oversimplified. I read that 6 of the last 8 super bowl champions had the statistically lesser defense of the 2 teams. But there is no overcoming a defense as imposing as the Seahawks was last night.

You need strong units in all 3 phases and ideally with at least one dominant one. Seattle had a competent offense that didn't turn over the ball.

EDITED to add: They also returned a kickoff for a TD.

That's actually my point--it gave the better defense even more of an edge. Earlier in the regular season, the over-officiating of defensive plays was more of an equalizer.
