    And yet another

$$. Extrapolate across the entire US population and this could easily raise $10 billion a year in tax revenue

I really don't think lawmakers understand the kind of market that exists out there.

colorado's first big tax day was yesterday from the sellers and dispensaries. expected to bring in 100m for the state from the 25% taxes that have been collected since it launched.

won't take long for majority of other states to hop on that gravy train. within 5 years everyone except the deep south/bible belt will follow suit. NC will probably legalize it. it's already at the point now where you get your herb taken and a citation if you have a small amount of weed on you. no longer arrested.

big tobacco and pharmaceutical companies won't be able to hold a candle to the $$$ that Doritos, taco bell, and pizza hut throw at the legalization movement.

The prison industry (Sometimes I can't even believe we have one of those) will be against it too.

you think so? might make the prisons actually just run at max capacity instead of on tilt.

Yes they will, you know since they have to meet quotas and such

                  Quotas for what?

I don't see this being an issue. Corrections cost state/fed governments almost $100 billion a year - this is a win/win revenue wise.

Big tobacco probably won't take this one laying down.
They will either use their filling/rolling machines to make joints and get in on the revenue OR litigate because weed is allegedly addictive and smoking is bad for you. They took it in the shorts on both those issues; I'll be pleasantly surprised if they just let this slide.

Pharma tried with Marinol and other non-smoking means of delivering THC, but failed miserably

As if we needed another reason

This is a no brainer. It's always been a matter of waiting for the baby boomers to grow up, acquire some wealth and political clout. Hard to believe that if you were 20 years old in 1968, you're 66 now.

It is def a win/win, but if you don't think Police and Prisons have quotas you are seriously mistaken..

Quotas saying a certain percentage of the beds will be filled. If they are not, the state has to pay

Far from the exception, Arizona's contractually obligated promise to fill prison beds is a common provision in a majority of America's private prison contracts, according to a public records analysis released today by the advocacy group In the Public Interest. The group reviewed more than 60 contracts between private prison companies and state and local governments across the country, and found language mentioning quotas for prisoners in nearly two-thirds of those analyzed.

What the alcohol industry? I'm sure they don't appreciate the competition.
