        Howie, rumors and common sense all suggest

        ...the Birds will do all of the following:

        They'll draft a safety early, but I really don't expect that in Round 1. At the moment of truth I think Chip will grab a big WR instead, especially if they let Cooper walk.

        They'll bring in a second tier free agent safety with a shot at a starting job, but also as a potential place holder for a rookie in need of a little time to adjust to big boy football.

        They'll re-sign Nate Allen to a cap friendly deal and see if he continues to take baby steps forward.

        This is a relatively low-risk strategy for a team that needs to spend at several other positions. It creates the kind of depth and competition Chip seems to want across the roster.
