But how would you handle 2-point conversions then? Moving the ball to the 25 for kicks and not conversions just seems arbitrary.

If there is no statistical significance - just take it out altogether.

Why the big push to change/eliminate the play in the first place ?

Mostly because the advertisers want you in front of the screen during all those post-TD commercials.
They want you paying close attention right after the most exciting plays

The point- after and the kick-off/touchback give fans 7-9 minutes to do something else, and they do. Advertisers aren't paying a premium price so you can pinch a loaf and skip them

When the new TV contracts were signed, billions were committed and they have to pay for it somehow. Every second of the NFL broadcast is being looked at and assessed to nth degree

The XP is pretty boring and pointless if there's nearly no statistical change of it being a miss.

It's a time waster - at the very least just make the 7 automatic to move the game along if a team isn't going to go for 2.

Really, I'd like to see some sort of increased incentive for teams to consider going for 2. The NFL is still too risk-adverse and going for 2 would add more variation to the game. If moving the XP back would do that I'd be all for it.

I'd be ok with this. It would still include the XP while making it less automatic and increasing the incentive to go for two.

But nobody bothers watching it, that's the part they are trying to "fix"
They need to add a layer of suspense to keep yer ass on the couch instead of in the bathroom or kitchen.

The most exciting play in football, the TD, is followed by the lamest 2 plays, an XP and a legislated touchback.
Nobody cared until TV/advertisers got deeply involved in the conduct of the game.

They ( TV) are no longer just the voyeur/spectator, they are impacting the actual game too in an effort to generate more revenue.

Sometimes rules get changed and have negative unintended consequences. In hoops, I hate the possession arrow. You tie a guy up when your team needs the ball and the arrow has to be pointing your way. Used to be you were rewarded with your hustle with a jump ball.

Oh well...maybe I have just attained such geezer status that I cant see progress and just want to keep things the way they were. I just dont get it. I dont even find the XP boring. I think its a nice exclamation "point" after my team scores a TD.

Using your analogy, the extra point is more like the possession arrow than the jump ball. Assuming the inbounds passer doesn't have butterfingers, it's nearly ALWAYS a possession for the team with the arrow. With the jump ball, there's actual competition and an typically unknown outcome.

Right now the XP is nearly always scored if attempted and a TD is for the most part a guaranteed 7 points. The only reason its not is if non-TD scoring happens to make going for 2 beneficial.

If you prefer the jump ball to the possession arrow I'd think you'd want there to be more required for those extra points.

And if more isn't going to be required, at least stop wasting everyone's time.

That's probably part of it-
with increased scoring, we get more time wasted each game.

The other part of the equation are all the rules handicapping the defense. The defense can't go head-up on the center, or flood one side of the line of scrimmage, or jump over players, or use another player to launch. A whole host of rules that prevent anybody from actually defending the play.

A few teams over the years contemplated using a Manute Bol- type dude to block FGs, but the game day roster limits prevent teams from using gadget guys and that's probably a good thing

I dont like the DH in beisbol either. Not sure how that one translates.

I guess there are things I'd rather not see them fuck with in any sport. Of course wayyyy back in the day they did a jump ball after every basket in hoops. Obviously that had to go.

Like I said maybe its just my geezer showing. Just dont like the idea of scrapping the XP.
