Pretty well-done piece. Sad. A lot of good people who work/worked there are getting (or got) screwed. Ultimately the readers are the ones who are hurt most.

The problem is, are the readers feeling so hurt they're willing to invest in the paper?

There are too many other sources of information and non-traditional forms of news and reporting that are readily available (and free for the most part) that the local paper isn't much of a priority.

the papers only have themselves to blame for that

had they charged for content when the Internet was created, they would still be profitable. Even with the print version going away. They gave it away free for years and now want to charge. People wont go for that.
