  • Conf(c) to car rental gurus

I need to rent a car this week. I have a crappy car, so I only have liability on my usual ride. If I rent with a Visa, I can decline the damage waiver and if need be, visa will cover my collision damage which I (hopefully) have nothing to worry about.

    I checked this site. http://usa.visa.com/personal/card-be...ion-waiver.jsp

Edit: I'm only renting a taurus or camry or sedan...

I would call Visa and tell them exactly what you're doing. I take it your car is not in a repair shop? A lot of times these Credit Card companies find loopholes, one of them being that they only cover waiver if its an insurance replacement rental. You're probably fine, but you might as well play it safe.

thanks - I hate calling 800 numbers but that's probably the smart thing to do.

I am taking it in for repairs, but I've got a guy who owns a small shop, so I he doesn't have any loaners.

        Be careful

Often youir insurance will not cover you for damage you do to the "non owned auto". Or they will try to disclaim coverage for a nit picky reason.

Check with your insurance person before proceeding. You may want to drop the car off at a mechanic so you could argue it is a replacement vehicle.

Better to be safe than sorry.

thanks - but I already checked with Ins and since I only have liability, it's a moot point.

Yeah, they usually don't cover "commercial vehicles" which I think rental cars technically are.

From working in the truck rental industry previously, I do recommend spending the little extra for a damage waiver. You prolly won't need it, but if something happens, the renting agency isn't very kind on pricing the damage if you have to pay out of pocket.
