  • Panthers trying to trade/likely to cut Steve Smith

This isn't a DREAM TEAM let's bring him in thread.

I just find it surprising considering he is the heart and soul "Dawkins" of that team. I'm curious to hear from the resident Carolina bored members on how their fan base feels about this. From what I understand, the Panthers have absolutely NOTHING behind him..

With the defense in place and the draft so wr heavy, I guess it makes more sense now than ever?

Ppl are losing their minds over it here. I can't say I disagree with them.

The Panthers have NOTHING behind him. LaFell sucks. Smith's numbers dropped last season but that was mostly because the Panthers changed their style. Their dominant defense took the pressure off Cam Newton. Smith had great numbers the previous two seasons and his skills really haven't eroded since then. The Panthers' new GM is a complete departure from their last. This is a move for the future made by a team that is built to win now. Bad idea.

Steve Smith is a bit of a cocksucker but he'll probably perform well elsewhere. I could see the Pats getting a lot out of him. I'll actually enjou ot to a degree considering how much I hate the Panthers.

The chip on his shoulder will be enormous. Whichever team signs him will get a lot of production, as long as they have a half decent QB.

No matter how much sh*t he talks, he always seems to back it up. This is a guy who gives 110% every sunday, very surprising to me.

I wonder what Cam Newton has to say about it..

yeah, chip on his shoulder is already out of control. it's the reason that i hate him but he's a great receiver. was nearly uncoverable for a couple seasons, maybe before you moved down here. i'm sure you've heard all the stories about him being a dick.

Oh, most definitely. I honestly think it's part of what makes him good though. I'm not a fan, but I really think they'd be making a large mistake.

                  New GM has little choice
They know they can't make him happy in terms of cash or playing time...and what happens when Steve isn't happy ?

His role will continue to decrease and its not likely he will take it well nor will he be an asset to the new guys brought in
Snip snip and move on. There's no happy ending here

I'd guess Smith still has 2-3 years of NFL talent in him and he's already into some rarefied air on the stats side.

The GM could make him happy, he just doesn't want to. It's not like Steve Smith is hitting free agency. He's due 7 million and he'd definitely get playing time. Brandon LaFell and Ted Ginn Jr. aren't quality starting WRs. When those guys are the other options, I don't see how Steve Smith isn't worth the money, especially for a team that needs to win now. Cam Newton is entering the last season of his rookie contract. He'll get WAY more money next season. I know that they probably think they can go WR in the draft but they're not in a position to rely on rookies.

If they get rid of Smith, then their top 4 WR's from last season will be gone. Strange move by a team that showed some promise for the first time in years last season.
