The less money part is just the most visible portion of the Patriot Way under BB ( part myth, part truth) - the larger idea is that the players put the needs of the Team ahead of their own selfish desires- and that's what helps win Championships

It also serves as a filter for which guys to keep long-term and which ones to rent. You marry the ones who are willing to subvert their needs, you rent the ones who can't / won't. Pats and others then set up the deal so the mercenaries get their cash upfront and very little dead cap when they inevitably leave.

With an agent and an entourage whispering in your ear, its tough to put the needs of others before your own, but that's what Belichick is asking of his guys

I'll even go as far to say that had they stayed in Cleveland, the browns would have won a super bowl before the 2000 Ravens did. Belichick had amassed a lot of good talent in that FO. Ozzie Newsome, Thomas Dmitrov, Scott Pioli, and more. That team was really ready to contend and Modell and Mike White, the mayor of Cleveland then, fucked everything up.
