  • With The 101st Pick In The 2014 NFL Draft...

...the Philadelphia Eagles select Marqueston Huff, free safety, Wyoming.

The kid's fast (4.49) and was a cornerback till last season so he has the veratility you like. They say he needs work to improve his technique but this kid has "upside" written all over him since he only played safety one season.

Fourth round -- sounds good to me.

Nah. They'll trade it for a lower fifth and a seventh rounder.

It's definitely going to be Desir.

Well, Read One Man's Opinion Of Huff

I was checking all the remaining safeties on the NFL's Draft Tracker site and that's why I thought Huff would be a good pick. Here's what CBS's folks say about him...

"A former cornerback who plays with quickness and impressive physicality for his size, Huff tallied 127 tackles from his new free safety position in 2013, averaging 10.6 per contest (11th in FBS).Huff opened eyes at the Senior Bowl in January. His intriguing athleticism to blanket receivers of all sizes, led to projecting him back to the corner at the next level. But his versatility and athleticism should earn him serious consideration starting in the middle rounds and zone-based teams will view him as a rare utility player."

127 freakin' tackles? Blanketed receivers at the Senior Bowl (yeah, there's that Senior Bowl again)? Considering it's the 4th round you know whoever they take will have SOME negatives, but I like the positives he brings. SO, if it was up to ME...

PS-Although, Desir Has HIS Strong Points, Too

I have to admit his story alone and what's he's gone through to get here is almost enough to make you want to pick him. The fact he won the Cliff Harris Award speaks volumes...I'm sitting here finding myself wavering, but on speed alone and those 127 tackles Huff had, I'll stick with him.

Thanks for bringing Desir's name into the discussion, Ells.

Another wide receiver or 34 future 7th round picks in addition to increased arrogance.

There is no question they will trade down to the mid fourth round. After that they'll deal Bryce Brown for a sixth. Howie won't be able to focus on making draft picks to improve his roster until the late fourth round. That will give his lunchtime adderall pill plenty of time to kick in. At noon, when the eagles are on the clock, this fraudulent circus freak won't have any idea where he is or what he's doing.

but who at this point is not going to be a work in progress?

                      Weaknesses....
Very tight in the hips -- straight-linish. Pedals tall and is late transitioning. Average recovery speed. Limited cover skills and awareness. Marginal ball skills and small, shaky hands (four career INTs in three seasons as a starter). Very average football IQ -- takes an extra tick to sort out routes and digest what he sees. Narrow vision. Limited agility and change of direction in man coverage. See-and-go reactor (not instant or anticipatory diagnosing). Not a forceful tackler or explosive hitter. Cleared of charges, but September assault incident requires closer scrutiny.

                      Bottom Line....
Box safety possessing the physical talent to compete in the NFL and even earn a starting job eventually if he can stay focused, commit to a playbook and hone his eyes. Should be able to factor readily on special teams. Coverage limitations will leave him vulnerable and would be best in a very simple scheme.
