Given the terrain and area that he lives in, I think he'll be just fine. When Mrs. Slizz and I went to Catalina, we rented mountain bikes and after a bit wished we had gone with the powered version.

The biggest issue with a granny gear is that you're moving so slowly that you get wobbly and it's a waste of energy in the long run. If you're not strong enough or are tired it's useful for nasty hills.--
