Politics aside, I think it's a bad idea to keep pumping so much CO2 into the Earth's atmosphere by burning stuff. The greenhouse gas physics are well established. See Venus.

Although I can agree in principle, what of the massive amounts that nature itself pumps into the atmosphere, whether by lightning starting a fire that covers 200,000 acres, or a volcano that disperses more in a week than humans do in a decade?

We can't control those things. We can control what we decide to burn.

This whole controversy is about who gets enriched financially and politically. It's not about science or what is best for the world.

Again, I can agree with your sentiment, but it doesn't change the fact that the civilized world closing a coal burning plant with scrubbers does little good if China builds a new coal plant every month with no controls.

I'm not sure why you are turning this into US vs. China. but if you really feel that way, I would say the way to approach this is to find ways where is China loses if they build a new coal plant every month.

There are technological paths to improve upon a lot of things we do but there is no doubt the road down those paths are impeded at every step by those who benefit and profit from the way things currently are. They have no self-interest in improving things. In fact, typically they have a self-interest in maintaining the status quo because they are benefiting and profiting from it, even if there are ways things could be better.

Wasn't trying to turn it into a China vs, US issue, but it is well known that both China and India are by far some of the worlds greatest polluters, I only used China as an example, as it is the 800 lb. gorilla in the room.

Nuke, solar and wind all should play a part. Also more tidal/hydro;

The problem I see is current nuke technology is highly polluting as well-- just not to the atmosphere. We can contain it, but we really don't know how to deal with it.

We really need a workable fusion reactor design, IMO.

Good idea, now instead of building Uranium 238 plants build nothing but Uranium 232 plants, cleaner, no waste to dispose of, more efficient, so why aren't we using them now?

As you stated, some people, would rather keep things the way they are, because they can profit from them. The only issue with using 232 is that thorium power plants would not produce weapons grade Plutonium, there is the answer to your question.
