His trade value may never be higher. Get something for him and the contract while you still can.

but..people go on and on about that contract and to me...that contract isn't nearly as bad as the hunter fucking pence trade.
how the fuck are you going to trade cosart, singleton and santana...who was a damn throw in...for that smirking twat?
basically, santana would be our #1 outfield prospect right now and all three guys would be top five.
i honestly don't care about that contract...that isn't what is hamstringing the phillies..it's the lack of talent coming up because ruben is a stone cold idiot.“I am going to literally sodomize you on the field of battle. I am going to have non-consensual sex with your face and your butt. Then I’m going after your wife and kid”

I'm a schill for no one. Let's review--
When he put up huge numbers, he went through arbitration and the Phils had to fork out the highest number ever for a player--10M for one year. So let's say for arguments sake he continued to put up huge numbers--he would have probably asked for--and got--at least 15-20M the next time around. At the time, he was putting up huge numbers and they were winning NL East titles and going to playoff games. So let's say again, after paying him close 35M in salary for arbitration, they weren't able to come to a deal and he signs with someone else and he continued putting up huge numbers to help his new team win. You guys would have been screaming out of your lungs the Phils were stupid for letting him go.
Did you have a crystal ball saying the guy was going to have problems with his legs? Or that he wouldn't be as productive as he once was? I doubt it and that is the chance they took when they either let him go for two picks in the draft or sign him thinking about his potential RBIs and homers down the road.
Now soon after everyone was calling that contract stupid you had the Tigers and Angels signing the other big ticket first basemen to equally incomprehensible contracts. But everyone acts like the Phils are the first team to give a player--who was certainly performing at a very high level--a contract they probably regretted. That's what I don't like--they made a decision to have his bat--unfortunately, his health wasn't on their side.

I'll give them credit for only doing a 5 year extension, the Pujols contract is ridiculous, but there was no pressure to get it done when they did.

For everyone else that doesn't know how the arbitration game works, a lot of teams, not only the Phils, like to go year by year. Madson and Werth would have been FAs after this year--that's why they offered Madson a multiyear deal--which he rejected at first before he finally signed it.
Victorino is under club control for another year after this one as is Blanton, I do believe.
As far as Howard goes, do the names Burrell and Abreu mean anything? Plenty of posters on this board roasted the Phils for signing them to multiyear deals with no trade clauses and watched both struggle. Howard will be 30 this year--and that typically is when power hitters start their downward trend.
Which would you rather have--them proceed like this with his contract or sign him to a 7 year 200M deal and then watch his numbers decline and then he become untradeable and the Phils have to eat his contract, preventing them from ever having the flexibility to improve the team?

Originally posted by JuTMSY4I think they're going to have to let Howard walk. Financially, his contract is going to be brutal and moreover, I'm not sure what he's going to produce from ages 32-38 that would equal the monster contract he'll get. Nevermind, how he'd handicap the team financially.
I guess, the real question is, what's Howard's value off the field in addition? Can that be achieved by age, say 36?
