  • this Katz thing just sinking in

Cant say that I knew the guy. Met him once at a Sixers game, interviewed him wayyyyy back in the 70s when he was running for Camden County freeholder. both times struck me as a regular guy who grew up in the then-Jewish section of Camden.

I remember once a guy called in to WIP as Lew from Center City and about a minute into the conversation (about the Nets' playoff performance that year) it became clear that it was the Nets owner. The host (I think it was Jody McDonald but I could be wrong on that) NEVER GOT IT that it was Katz. The next morning Angelo had some fun with that.

It did not take long for the conspiracy theorists to claim Katz' death was a "hit" by Inky rival buyer and Camco party boss George Norcross (ridiculous) but given more fuel by the fact a political rival of Norcross' dad, a former Camco party chair named Jimmy Joyce was ALSO killed in a mysterious plane crash about 30 years ago....just weird.

Katz was a part-time resident and downashore neighbor of my friend Red Klotz, whose character judgement I have found to be on the mark. Red always loved the guy. Also, of the many journalists I know...never heard one bad thing about Katz. To a person, they called him a class act.

Anyway...the enormity of the tragedy is just staying with me today and want to send condolences to Bardy who was coached by him as a Little Leaguer, Diggle, who is friends with his son, and anyone else who was touched by the guy. He will be missed.

    That is all.
