  • Giants ranked as the 4th best secondary in the NFL

behind only the Seahawks (duh), Bengals, and Cardinals

    http://www.sportsonearth.com/article...rdinals#!ZHxkz

    4. New York Giants

The Giants entered the offseason with a great safety (Antrel Rolle), an outstanding nickel defender (Trumaine McBride) and lots of questions. They then added Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Walter Thurmond and Quentin Demps to fill in the ample cracks. For the Giants, that's roughly six years' worth of free-agent acquisitions in a month, and the results should be immediate.

DRC and Thurmond both arrive with some questions, but Rodgers-Cromartie's ability to gamble-and-bait is a major step up from Terrell Thomas' attempt to recapture his pre-multiple-ACL-tear form, while Thurmond was a valuable role player in Seattle before injuries and suspensions. Prince Amukamara allows too many short receptions but few deep ones, and he is still developing after an early career filled with injuries. Amukamara and DRC should complement each other well, while McBride was a 2013 revelation after years of practice squad and bench bouncing.

Rolle, meanwhile, leads a safety corps that excelled at shutting down long running plays last year, and Demps is a natural free safety who can allow Rolle to prowl close to the line of scrimmage. The Giants secondary stats looked great last year. Part of that was Rolle and McBride (and Amukamara and Thomas' ability to keep things manageable), part of it was coordinator Perry Fewell, who adjusts his system to keep players out of bad positions. But part of it was a terrible offense that allowed opponents to play conservatively to beat the Giants. Fewell, Rolle and some others are still here, but with all the reinforcements, they won't need the offense to look bad to make the secondary look better.

And that's with the article forgetting to mention Stevie Brown who is the actual starting free safety rather than Demps who is the 3rd safety

    then again:

    The Five Worst Front Sevens

    29. New York Giants

Losing Linval Joseph and Justin Tuck is going to hurt. Joseph was a mountainous presence inside, and while Tuck's competitive fire was starting to look like the barbecue pit after a long weekend, he could still ramp it up and dominate in short stretches. Youngsters Johnathan Hankins and Damontre Moore hope to step up, and Robert Ayers provides some depth as a rotation defender, but that is not a fair exchange, at least this year. Jason Pierre-Paul is either a Comeback Player of the Year candidate or vaporware.

The Giants line has gotten younger, but the linebackers have gotten older. The plucky late-round and free agent rookies of the 2011 Super Bowl run are still here -- Spencer Paysinger, Mark Herzlich, Jacquian Williams -- and they still would look much better as a special teams brigade than as regular contributors (though Paysinger has become a decent run defender). Jon Beason is back after his 2013 rebirth, while Jameel McClain arrives to test the theory that if your idea to improve your defense involves someone from the 2012 Ravens, you need a much better idea.

The Giants defense recorded just 33 sacks last year, 14 of them from linemen who are now gone. Most of the team's rebuilding resources went to the offense. Maybe Hankins and Moore will pay dividends in a year or two, but they will need additional reinforcements, particularly at linebacker.

So basically what you are saying is that the guy that wrote the article doesn't know what he is talking about?

      Ok, sounds about right.

Since quarterbacks are going to have all day to throw and running backs will be able to drive Mack trucks through your line, it probably wouldn't matter if you had Deion Sanders, Night Train Lane, Ronnie Lott, and Rod Woodson back there.

How are Maclin, Cooper, and Matthews going to get open against these guys?

DRC, Prince, and Thurmond will smother them all day long, with the help of Rolle and Brown

Expect Nick Foles to hold the ball with nowhere to go, and take sacks.

It's called hand the ball off to the best RB in the league against one of the worst front 7's in the league according to your website.

By running past them ... like everyone else in the league.
