announcer Fernando Palomo says "Fred" during play by play.

    He'll say some shit like:

"Masa Rrrrrrrodrigeuz loses the ball to Fred"

    Fred coming out

    and Jo coming in.

    Bwah.

I know they are classic Brazilian "one-names" but it makes me laugh.

OK -- Got A Question For You

What's with the practice of using only one name? Always wondered about that.

I have no idea but I do know that brazilians love nicknames, everyone has a nickname there. also we dont really use last names alot in school for example we would never call a teacher by its last name, it was always on first name basis.

Whoa! Athletes I Can Understand, But Teachers?

What about neighbors? Older friends of your parents or grandparents? Heck, even though he told me to call him Bill when I interviewed him about 20 years ago at state wrestling, I still call my 7th grade science teacher Mr. _____.

Hulk doesn't do it to me like Fred.

Fuckin' Fred just sounds so damn goofy to me.

when I was in high school we'd slip out a silent but deadly and say "Fred's out!" or if you smelled one it was "who let fred out?"

Yeah usually its first name basis for example a teacher you would call him professor John and a older neighbor would be mrs maria (senhora maria or dona maria). now if you have 2 friends with the same name in brazil they would never use the last name to refer to that person for example mike smith or mike jones, instead they would be big head mike or little mike.
