  • Jason Avant says he and Chip "butted heads"

and Avant says he knew he was on his way out.

To me, it sounds like just buying into the system isn't enough.

Now when do we finally see the end of Casey Matthews' Eagles career?

Avant is as average a football player there is and didn't have ideal skills for the system. No surprise.

System? I thought coach Kelly says he bends his "system" to the players in it. Right? Regardless of Avant's skill level, he was still the 3rd best WR on the team last year. And it wasn't even close between him and the 4th guy.

So which Eagles WR's were better than Avant last season? What reality are you in? Elaborate, genius. This should be rich.

What the fuck does that have to do with his general proposition about you?

            Nothing.

Oh, by the way, Avant himself stated he butted heads over "route running and route technique" and that this made him conclude that he didn't fit Kelly's system.

So, are you suggesting that Kelly, beyond taking Avant's skills into account, still should have adapted his system to such an extent that he let the player decide on the way he ran the route and the technique he used?

He will have plenty of opportunities in Carolina to prove himself.

Blah blah blah. Avant scored 2 TDs last season and had less than 500 yards. I think when Kelly bends his system has referring more so to the starting WRs, RB, QB, and TEs(one of which will have an expanded role this season) than a 31 year old WR. But maybe I'm supposed to read into this that Chip is a high school Harry and it should be no surprise that Avant would choose to play with Ron Rivera.

Yeah, when you think about guys you want to mold your system around, you think of Jason Avant. I always liked him as a person, but it's not like he's been putting up 1,000+ yard seasons his whole career.

Kelly doesn't have to have burners like Avant suggested, but he's also not going to keep you around forever just because you're a good guy and occasionally make one-handed catches.

Right. That would be Desean Jackson.

Anyway, I thought Kelly wanted receivers who could block.

i don't doubt that kelly wants receivers who can block but this whole "butting heads" thing is being sensationalized. avant said that kelly didn't like that avant got open in atypical ways. to me that translates to kelly didn't like how slow avant was. it makes sense that they parted ways.

Good job injecting DJax into a completely unrelated thread. My point was in response to Ref's suggestion that Chip somehow mold the offense to fit a slow, old 3rd WR.

As far as your point, blocking is one part of it. So is speed, catching, route running, etc... I figure this would be obvious to someone who follows football.

Avant's making excuses because he's just not that good.

You implied a career of 1000 yard seasons could keep a guy around. That brings Jackson into the discussion, doesn't it?

Kelly likes who he likes. As long as he wins he doesn't have to give his reasons.
