A few years ago, I was under the impression from discussions on this board that these cars lacked merit. Does this still hold true?

The problem with the battery powered/hybrid cars is that you can put solar on your rooftop and generate your own electricity to charge them
Corporate America isn't on board with that plan and the petroleum industry and their puppets are working hard to ensure that solar doesn't kill their golden goose
Hydrogen on the other hand.... still needs to be acquired and distributed, something John Q Public isn't capable of doing right now

Look for a Toyota vs Tesla battle for the future of transportation. Both completely different visions. On the face of it, it would seem Elon Musk doesn't have a prayer. Not so sure the fight will be over so soon. The guy is a mad genius and his solar powered charging stations are popping up all over the west coast already.

There needs to be an easy way to swap out high energy density batteries quickly or charge them in the time it takes to fill a gas tank for them to be viable for varied uses. If you've got a garage for charging every night (rules many apartment dwellers out) and a reasonable short commute, they can work.
Fuel cells generate electricity so maybe a hybrid battery/fuel cell concept would work.--------
