Most sports ratings live and die with the casual fans; the diehards are a given and a much smaller portion of the audience. How did golf do without Tiger or the Tour de France without Lance ?

The incremental revenue/ratings gained from an entire nation being engaged is what the advertisers want

Once a country/team/star is eliminated, the diehards continue, the casuals move on to the next big thing . Works for all the sports in all the countries
