This SI exclusive "scoop" is not quite as bad as the television bullshit ... but it's pretty douche-y.
Obscenity is the last refuge of an inarticulate motherfucker.

      Magary's take.

While narratives change a lot, people tend to remain the same, and I would wager that the only thing about LeBron James that has changed since The Decision back in 2010 is that he now knows precisely what kind of horseshit sports fans and sportswriters want, and how to deliver that horseshit. It should be humble, it should be understated, and it should turn up in tasteful prose in a tasteful magazine. Read that essay in SI and you see LeBron touch on every possible item in the great American psychic lunchpail:

      ...

All of this gets you the requisite pat on the head from the media—some large percentage of which is a lot more interested in pandering to the idea of the moral superiority of the Rust Belt than in actually living there—all because you did things the RIGHT WAY.

Anyone who thinks this is anything more than long-term income maximization for him is a dope.

You've already turned. That took long.

              That SI article was Hollywood-heartfelt.

And I'm not anti-Lebron. But everything is a PR move. Which I get, he's a superstar.

When I said that it would be weird rooting for him at first, that didn't mean that I wasn't happy he was back. It would be like if there was a situation where Tony Romo would now be the Eagles quarterback. Would it not be a little weird rooting for him after bashing him all these years ? That's what I was saying.

It's not like that at all. You (all of Ohio) bashed LeBron because you were the ex-girlfriend who were jealous of the new girl and always wanted him to change his mind and dump her for you.

We boo Romo because he plays for our biggest rival.

Now that LeBron has come back, all of you Ohioans are putting up the front that it will be "weird" or "he has to earn it" simply because you're afraid of getting hurt again.

You better hope the Cavs build the team he wants because if not, LeJumpship James will be on the move again soon enough.

The 2 year deal with a opt out clause is all I need to know. Lebron has a very good agent. The Cavs isn't winning shit ever and I think Lebron will bail ship again.

I really believe LA is where he will end up at the end once Kobe retires.

Why go to the West? He doesn't need to be in LA for endorsements and there's more competition.

I know what I meant when I said that, and if you think the prevailing sentiment here is that he has to earn something to be back in our good graces, you aren't paying attention. People here are happy as hell to have him back, and before he said that he was returning, most people around here were resigned to the fact that he was either never coming back, or coming back at the very end of his career.

There's absolutely going to be people who will still feel betrayed and will need him to prove he's not going to do it again before they fully trust him. I understand the contract was signed for 2 years for TV deal reasons, but him signing such a short deal with an opt out after only 1 season doesn't go far to convince those people he's truthful with his Sports Illustrated PR letter.

As far as telling you how it is, I'm not speaking for how it is in Cleveland, I'm just telling you the Tony Romo comparison holds no weight. At all.

There is no comparison to what Cleveland is dealing with when it comes to LeBron. The most depressing city in all of sports (and in general) had the best player in the league born in its vicinity. He was then drafted by that team and turned the city that was always the butt of the joke into a real contender. Then…he leaves and that city goes back to being a joke again. He willingly chose to leave the city that put all of its hopes and dreams on his shoulders for an easier path to a title. Then, he comes back.

That scenario has happened all of zero times in sports before this past week. Comparing it to cheering for a player that used to be a rival just doesn't work because the LeBron/Cleveland relationship means so much more than just a rival switching teams.

                          That is all I meant.
